Community agreement

What is community, and why do you have it?

Establishing a shared agreement

Meaningful collaboration requires preparation for discussion and understanding across different perspectives. During the journey process, teams will encounter conflicting ideas and disagreements, which are essential for deep problem-solving. Rather than avoiding conflict, the goal instead is to engage with differences in ways that are respectful and productive.

Community agreements create shared accountability for how teams communicate with one another, listen, and collaborate. The key is to make commitments concrete: the team defines what those commitments look like and holds one another accountable in practice. That specificity increases the awareness of the dynamic within the group and helps to ensure all voices are heard.

The process

Teams collaborate to develop their agreements & record them in their workbooks.

Facilitators utilize these agreements to remind teams of their commitments to one another and to encourage accountability as they navigate challenging conversations and collaborative work.
