How We Design

Sukhwant Jhaj
Dean, University College
Vice Provost of Academic Innovation and Student Achievement
At University College, we believe higher education must do more than evolve. It must be reimagined.
Higher education across America feels stuck. It is too expensive, too exclusive, and too slow to meet the moment. We see it too. That is why we have built something different at ASU: a model that is accessible, affordable, and designed for real impact.
Deliberate design is our method for change. It is a way of thinking that begins with asking the right questions, seeing systems clearly, co-designing with the people who live the realities we seek to improve, using AI and technology thoughtfully, and building practical solutions that meet the needs of today's students. Doing what we have always done simply guarantees what we have always gotten. Deliberate design pushes us to break old habits, rethink assumptions, and shape new paths forward.
Designing is not just about imagining change; it is the messy, collective work of making it real. Our students deserve systems that are built for them, for who they are today and the future they are shaping.
The world is not fixed. It is malleable. At University College, design is how we reshape it—with our students, for our communities, and for a stronger, more competitive future.
