What is credit for service learning?

Credit for Service Learning allows you to earn college credit for meaningful service you’ve already completed. This is currently offered as a pilot program with limited seats available.

UNI 194, Preparing Your Service-Learning Portfolio guides you through creating a reflective portfolio demonstrating what you have learned from your service experience. Credit is awarded based on the successful demonstration of learning outcomes through your portfolio submission, with 1 to 12 credit hours available depending on the number of service hours completed (starting at 45 hours).

Through structured reflection, analysis, and skill articulation, you’ll explore the impact of your service work, connect your experiences to academic theories and career competencies, and develop a polished portfolio that demonstrates personal growth, transferable skills, and future aspirations.

  • UNI 194: 1 credit hour
    UNI 394: 1-12 credit hours
Awarded credits count as 300-level elective credits.

  • UNI 394 costs: $50 per approved credit hour *
Cost varies by approved service hours.

  • Class type: Online

  • Session: B (Spring 2026)

  • Eligible services: AmeriCorps or Peace Corps participation, religious missions, and community or humanitarian work.

Tuition and fees

You’ll take a 1-credit course (UNI 194) at the regular ASU tuition rate. When you submit your portfolio, you’ll also pay a $50 per credit hour review fee. The number of credits you can earn depends on how many hours of service you completed.

For Spring 2026, payment is due May 15, 2026. Review will not commence until the fee is paid. Credits are determined by the hours of the experience.

You will verify your experience in UNI 194: Preparing Your Service Learning Portfolio via an Experience Verification Form, which requires approval from a site/experience supervisor.

The portfolio is to be submitted one week after UNI 194 concludes, May 15, 2026, for the Spring 2026, Session B semester.

You will be notified via your ASU email address when your portfolio is reviewed on a pass/fail grading basis. If you pass, you will earn the full amount of credits that align with your service experience. If you fail, no partial credit will be granted. However, you are eligible for one re-submission at no additional cost.

You will be awarded 1 credit hour for the successful completion of UNI 194. Upon portfolio submission and successful demonstration of learning outcomes, you can then earn an additional 1 to 12 upper-division credit hours (reflected as UNI 394 elective credits).

The applicability of the credit is dependent on your major and credit you have already earned. It is recommended you consult with your advisor on the applicability of these credits toward your degree.

ASU may offer course credit for your military experience. Please visit the Pat Tillman Veterans Center and ASU's Admissions to learn more about how to turn your military experience into course credit.
