Reading Strategies That Work

Why It Matters?

Reading for learning starts with setting intention and focus. This will help you identify what is important to remember, help you link new information with what you already know, and will improve reading comprehension.

How Do I Read to Learn?

Before you begin to read, it is important to think about the goal of the reading and create questions that will help you focus on essential information. There are several strategies you can use to help you learn while reading complex texts. One efficient and effective strategy you can use is the SQ3R method. Use the 5-step process below to learn from your reading:

  1. Survey - Review headings, subheadings, figures, and graphs. Skim the reading to get an understanding of what the reading is about.
  2. Question - Create a set of questions you expect the reading to answer based on your completed survey. Start by changing headings and subheadings into questions. Then, take about one minute to think of other questions the reading might answer. Also, consider adding why or how questions while you are reading.
  3. Read - The task is to look for answers to the questions you posed while keeping in mind the content of the reading based on your survey.
  4. Recite - After each section you have read, summarize what you have read in your own words and decide if it has answered your posed questions.
  5. Review - Revisit the content regularly, focusing on your questions and answers. Make connections to previous learning, and if possible, think of ways you can apply what you are learning to something in your life.

When Should I Use SQ3R?

This method is particularly useful when you have to read and learn from difficult texts or textbooks. You can also use this method while studying for exams, as it creates a structured approach to learning, ensuring that you organize the information effectively and increase comprehension. Lastly, you can use this method when preparing for a discussion or recitation class because you will have a thorough understanding of the material.

Action:

The next time you are required to read a difficult text for class, utilize the SQ3R method. If this strategy seems overwhelming, begin by doing a quick survey of the material to give yourself a preview of what you will be learning. Then, while reading, ask yourself why and how questions when appropriate. A simple tip for the Recite step is to place blank Post-it notes or strips at the end of each section to remind you to stop and summarize what you learned. Afterward, reflect on how the SQ3R method has deepened your understanding and connection to the material; that is, determine how this method has improved your comprehension and retention of the material you are learning and think about what adjustments you can make to better integrate this strategy into your study sessions.
