Working learners program

Gain career skills and money for college through ASU’s Working Learners Program

The Working Learners Program is a practical and effective solution to creating greater access to education and promoting workforce readiness. Through ASU’s University College, the program combines work experience with academic experience to offer opportunities to gain valuable professional skills, become workforce-ready, and earn money to pay for college.

Whether you’re just starting college or have been working for decades, learners at any point in their lives can participate in the Working Learners Program.

Step 1:The Working Learners Program all begins with the Ignite Your Career course

Spark your career through your student work experience

The Working Learners Program is all about building better career-readiness for your university journey. How does this happen? Well, in a nutshell:

  1. Your supervisors expand their roles to act as career guides and mentors, who will support your professional goals via a series of regularly scheduled meetings.
  2. You'll have the opportunity to build valuable work skills like Information and Data Literacy, Intercultural Competency, and Workplace Communication in specialized micro-courses offered to students in the Working Learners Program.
  3. With each valuable course or work experience, you can additionally work with your instructors or supervisors to develop a portfolio consisting of your work and reflections, which can act as a showcase of your professional development.

Here are a few reasons why the Working Learners Program is pretty great:

  • It’s unique. Transforming student jobs into career-building experiences isn’t done at any other university at this scale. (#1 in innovation, anyone?)
  • It’s designed for the future of work. You’re probably familiar with all that talk about automation, AI, and the rapidly changing nature of work in the future. (“Will robots take all the jobs?” “What skills do I need?”) Spoiler alert: no one knows. What we do know, however, is that it’ll be important to have an arsenal of flexible and durable skills, and the Working Learner Program’s micro-courses deliver just that.
  • It bridges the divide between work and school. Work and school aren’t separate things, and pretending that they are just makes both areas of development less effective. The Working Learners Program is a part of University College’s larger effort to embrace an integrated model.
  • It reshapes the worker-supervisor dynamic. Our sincere hope is that your supervisor doesn’t feel like just a taskmaster, but many jobs are set up in ways that lend themselves to that unfortunate arrangement. The Working Learners Program aims to rethink the relationship between the worker and supervisor, orienting it around a growth mindset.
