What's the problem?

Food waste is a significant issue within the catering and restaurant industry, whether it's through financial losses, environmental harm, or broader social implications. The industry often faces challenges like overproduction, over-ordering, and discarding untouched leftovers. These practices contribute to substantial food waste, impacting both profitability and sustainability -- and our team felt that maybe machine learning could do something about it.

But First...

Ideation

Our team knew we wanted to use the power of machine learning to address a greater social issue in our community. Food is a universal human experience and need, bringing us together across cultures and backgrounds.

We decided that our primary focus would be on restaurants, catering kitchens, and businesses.

These groups all generate substantial amounts of leftover food, which we realized could be sorted and distributed for different purposes. In completing our empathy map, we were able to recognize that the people involved probably knew food waste was a major issue, but various barriers -- like logistical challenges and risks -- could prevent them from taking action.

Ideation

Defining a better solution to the problem

Our team tackled the food waste challenge by implementing a machine learning (ML) sorting system in our kitchens to accurately categorize leftover food for redistribution or composting in real-time. This technological innovation would also be supported by employee training and awareness campaigns for a sustainable culture. We also developed a mobile app that connects businesses with distributors and food delivery services, ensuring surplus food reaches those in need quickly. Inspired by industry insights and successful case studies, we prioritized these solutions for their feasibility and impact.

The Prototype

Our team's prototype provides the layout for our app, which helps connect the food businesses with distributors. The home screen displays the names and locations of community resources for food nearby. As a business owner or staff member, you'll be able to select one of these options and schedule a pickup to distribute your extra food.
