The need to transform higher education is more crucial than ever, especially in a time when most students will work jobs tomorrow that don’t exist yet today. Rapid change will affect everything from healthcare and transportation to governments and the climate.
Rising to this challenge means to engage with learning beyond classrooms, lectures, and web modules; but crucially, to also engage in meaningful, relevant experiences. Experiential learning aims to equip students not just breadth in knowledge, but depth in mindsets and relevant skills.
Experiential learning is defined as learning from experience or learning by doing. Skills and knowledge are acquired from firsthand experiences. These experiences include research, study abroad, internships, service learning and field practicums.

Envisioning a complex future begins with the right ingredients. University College proposes a comprehensive experience for each of ASU’s 96,000 undergraduate learners in the form of a personalized and flexible certificate program. The program is designed to be simple and accessible, consisting of a few milestones which can be completed during any term and in almost any order depending on your schedule and interests.
Participate in learning experiences by choosing from a wealth of work-integrated learning courses and experiential opportunities. To equip learners with a comprehensive and nuanced toolkit for their future careers, learners will be required to participate in at least one activity from six of our seven thematic areas of experience: Leadership; Entrepreneurship and Innovation; Sustainability and Resilience; Global Engagement; Work + Learn; Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity; and Community Service.
Learner experiences are rich and multifaceted, and their records should reflect that. In addition to a certificate, experiential learning activities will be recorded and assessed in a learner-centered transcript authenticated by blockchain technology, ensuring that learner records are kept durable, transparent, and decentralized. This will be complemented with a digital portfolio that stores and showcases a learner’s reflective activities, granting a beneficial holistic and personal dimension to every individual learner’s activities.
