SPA 294 Spanish Service Learning Internship (3 credits)

Contact Adelina Zottola: 480-965-8431 or service.learning@asu.edu

Please note: Students have the same opportunity to utilize Spanish skills in all Service Learning Program internships (including Science & Math internships), by requesting to be assigned English-learner children. However, SPA credit is available only through this SPA 294 section of the After-School or Morning Tutoring internship.

IMPORTANT: SPA 294 does not satisfy the General Studies Cultural Diversity requirement. If you wish to satisfy this requirement, you should enroll in UNI 402 or any of the Science & Math internships (except for UNI 484 and MSE 484).

Enroll in SPA 294 and tutor and mentor K-8th grade children with limited English language skills in an after-school program, engaging the children in fun learning activities focused on reading, math, and other academic subjects. Brief reflective writing assignments help you process and learn from your experience. No exams. Fee ($25-applies to transportation costs).

SPA 294 Service Learning interns help Spanish-speaking children transition into English-speaking environments. Tutoring includes a variety of activities including homework assistance, practicing basic English-speaking skills, and reading and writing in English. Having a tutor with Spanish skills is vital for these children to have a smooth transition into the mainstream.

  • No experience with children is necessary. Training is provided.
  • Students at all Spanish-skill-levels welcome. You don't need to be fluent, but need to have earned credit in SPA 202 or concurrently enroll in SPA 202.
  • May be taken for honors credit via an honors contract.
  • Some internship sites require a full background-check and fingerprinting, at no cost to student.
SPA 294 is a section of the After-School or Morning Tutoring Service Learning Internship and, except for the SPA 202 pre/corequisite requirement, has the same course requirements and procedures. Please review the After-School or Morning Tutoring Internship description for further details.

SCHEDULE OPTIONS are the same as for the UNI 402 After-School or Morning Tutoring Service Learning Internship. Hours listed already include 30-minutes travel time at beginning and end of timeframe. Transportation from the Tempe campus is available.

OPTIONAL: If you'll be enrolling in ENG 102, consider also enrolling in a special Service Learning section of ENG 102, in addition to the SPA 294 internship.

Prerequisites/Corequisites

If you have not already earned credit in SPA 202 or higher, you must also enroll in SPA 202 during the same semester that you enroll in this SPA 294 Service Learning internship (total of 7 credits: 3 for SPA 294 and 4 for SPA 202). You may enroll in any section of SPA 202.
