Major and Career Exploration Courses

UNI 150—Career and Major Exploration

This one-credit student development course will actively engage students in their educational and career planning process. The classes (limited to 19 students or fewer) are five weeks long and are offered at different start times during the semester. Required for new Exploratory students.

At the end of the course, students will:

  1. Have completed assessments and clarified their understanding of their personality, interests, skills, and values.
  2. Have developed skills to research the major(s) or career(s) they are considering.
  3. Know how to use information they gather to make a good decision.
  4. Have an understanding of cultural diversity that improves success in today’s workplace.

Students will create an action plan for their academic and career achievement in this class. While the course is practical and applied, it also addresses the broader view of work in our lives. Additionally, the course is structured to create a learning community where the student is known individually by the instructor and other students.

UNI 250—Choosing a Major

Prepare for academic and professional success with this one-credit career development course. This course will actively engage students in the career planning process. Due to intensive instructor-student interaction, the five-week classes are limited to a maximum of 19 students. Required for continuing Exploratory students.

In Choosing a Major, you will:

  1. Explore a challenging career goal that leads to unlimited opportunities.
  2. Discover a major that taps into your potential and stimulates your academic performance.
  3. Explore internships that will provide the link to career.
  4. Gain information on the key skills that employers seek.

Active learning and small-group discussion are predominant in this class. The course will include discussion of the trends that affect our careers today such as globalization, decentralization, the knowledge worker, and the need for lifelong learning.
