ASU Students Graduating University College - Advising

Declaring / Changing Your Major

Students who need assistance searching for major options at ASU may meet with a University College academic advisor. We can help students explore different major requirements, and how your current and/or completed college credits will apply to different majors. We recommend students visit eAdvisor to begin exploring ASU major options prior to meeting with an academic advisor.

If you already have one specific major in mind, it would benefit you to speak directly with that department academic advisor. Please visit our ASU Academic Advising Directory to locate the appropriate advisor/office who can assist you with your new major.

ASU policy restricts students who are not in Good Academic Standing (see chart below) from changing their major outside of their current college.

Academic Good Standing
Total Earned Hours Minimum Cumulative GPA
24 or fewer 1.60
25-55 1.75
56 or more 2.00

Some departments may require higher grade point averages or have other restrictions for students hoping to change their major.

Changing a major requires a student to visit the academic advising office of the new major. This office will notify you of the specific process needed to change your major. Please ask your new major advising office if there are any special academic advising requirements you must complete.

Many ASU advising offices restrict certain time periods (first week of classes, enrollment dates, etc.) for major changers. Please complete the processes for changing your major during non-peak advising periods of the year.

Changing Your ASU Major to an Exploratory Major Track

If you are a current ASU student (with less than 45 credits completed) with a declared major, and you wish to declare an exploratory major track, you must meet with a University College academic advisor. Please call your campus University College Academic Advising office to schedule an appointment. During this appointment, we will assist you in evaluating the benefits and consequences of declaring an exploratory major track.

Prior to meeting with a University College academic advisor, students should visit the four exploratory major track major maps to determine which exploratory major track will be best to choose.

Exploratory—Engineering, Math, Technology & Physical Sciences

Exploratory—Fine Arts/Humanities/Design

Exploratory—Health & Life Sciences

Exploratory—Social/Behavioral Sciences

Students may not change their major to an exploratory major track after the published Transaction Deadline Date for each semester (click here for academic calendar). After your grades are posted for the previous semester, you may then proceed with changing your major to an exploratory major track if you are in academic good standing. We are not able to meet with students wishing to declare an exploratory major track during add-drop weeks or enrollment dates in spring or fall semesters.

Students who have exceeded 45 total college credit hours earned may not declare any exploratory major track.
